Web 2.0 For All


NOTE:  Teachers, please always look over any website first to make sure content is appropriate for the age group you are teaching.  You never know when a site may change or include  inappropriate advertising, etc.


Audio Editor -
Audacity is a free downloadable software that allows students and teachers to create podcasts and save them to several formats including mp3 format.  This software is also helpful for any lesson where recording sound/voice will enhance learning.  For example, a student working on fluency can record and listen to themselves.

Back Channeling -
TodaysMeet helps you embrace the backchannel and connect with your audience in real time.  Encourage the room to use the live stream to make comments, ask questions, and use that feedback to tailor your presentation, sharpen your points, and address audience needs.

Bookmarking -
Diigo is a social bookmarking site that allows you access to your bookmarks from any computer.  These are special premium accounts provided specifically to K-12 & higher-ed educators. Once your Diigo Educator application is approved, your account will be upgraded to have these additional features: 
  • You can create student accounts for an entire class with just a few clicks (and student email addresses are optional for account creation)
  • Students of the same class are automatically set up as a Diigo group so they can start using all the benefits that a Diigo group provides, such as group bookmarks and annotations, and group forums.
  • Privacy settings of student accounts are pre-set so that only teachers and classmates can communicate with them.
  • Ads presented to student account users are limited to education-related sponsors.
Bookmarking - Delicious is a social bookmarking site that allows you to save your bookmarks on the web so that you can access them easily from any computer with an Internet connection.  No more losing your bookmarks!

Brochure Maker -
MyBrochureMaker - In just 5 easy steps, you will create brochures for your business, your group or yourself.

Comic Makers -
Make Beliefs Comix is a tool that allows your students to create their own comics.  You can use it as an alternative method for assessment.  For example, students create a dialog between Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet during on unit on U.S. history.

Creativity -
Aviary is an on-line web 2.0 suite that allows you to do  Photo-editing, logos, web templates, filters, color palettes, screen capture and more.

File Storage/Backup - Dropbox is a way to store your files on-line so that you can open them up from home.  It is kind of like a place for backing up your important files when you forgot your usb drive.  It is super easy to use.

Data Collection - Gapminder is an on-line visual data source that can be manipulated.  It  sought to unveil the beauty of statistical time series by converting boring numbers into enjoyable, animated and interactive graphics.  Gapminder is a web-service displaying time series of development statistics for all countries.  This is an amazing, amazing resource.
 
Digital Storytelling - With VoiceThread, group conversations are collected and shared in one place from anywhere in the world. All with no software to install.  A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.  Users can doodle while commenting, use multiple identities, and pick which comments are shown through moderation. History Simulation - Quest Atlantis (QA) is an international learning and teaching project that uses a 3D multi-user environment to immerse children, ages 9-16, in educational tasks. QA combines strategies used in the commercial gaming environment with lessons from educational research on learning and motivation. Participation in this game is designed to enhance the lives of children while helping them grow into knowledgeable, responsible, and empathetic adults. Ideas and Tools - Ideas to Inspire is a site that lists many ideas and tools for classroom use which have been contributed by teachers from around the world.  There is something for just about everyone here and definitely worth checking out.

Image Editing-Be Funky has 21 basic photo effects to use, hundreds of options to add clipart type objects and frames to the pictures, as well as the ability to add text boxes, and speech bubbles.

Mind Mapping - Webspiration is an on-line version of Inspiration.  It can be used anywhere and allows students and teachers to save their mind maps.  Use Webspiration to map out ideas, organize with outlines and collaborate online with teams or colleagues. Webspiration unleashes your creativity, strengthens organizational skills, and transforms your ideas and information into knowledge.

Movie Creator - Xtranormal is a text to movie maker that allows you to create your own movies and share them with others on-line.

Music Creator - JamStudio is a free on-line place where you can make your own music!

Newspaper Clipping Generator -  from Fodey allows students to key in text to create their own newspaper clipping that they can use for projects.   There are some new generators that have links on this page now as well like a pack of cigarettes that says something that may be inappropriate for younger children.  Please view site before using.

Photo Editor -Picnik makes your photos fabulous with easy to use yet powerful editing tools. Tweak to your heart’s content, then get creative with oodles of effects, fonts, shapes, and frames.

Poster Maker - Glogster is an on-line tool that allows your students or yourself to create posters that they can share and collaborate on.

Presentation Tool - Prezi is a tool that allows you to create astonishing presentations live and on the web.

Puzzle Maker - JigZone is a jigsaw puzzle maker where you can use your own pictures. 

Research in Real Time - Twitter is a rich source of instant information. Stay updated. Keep others updated. It's a whole thing.

Search Engine - Addictomatic -Addictomatic searches the best live sites on the web for the latest news, blog posts, videos and images.   After you search, you can personalize your results dashboard by moving around the source boxes. When you're done, bookmark the page and keep coming back to your personalized results dashboard for that search.  Our news pages provide the latest headlines on topics such as entertainment, politics, shopping, sports and more. You get all the feeds from the best sources in each category. And like your search results dashboard, you can personalize the layout of the headline boxes, delete ones you don't like and bookmark your personalized page.

Search Engine - Google Custom Search allows you to create your own search that allows students to only go to certain places that you choose.  In other words, you sort of pre-filter the best websites for them to go to on a given topic.  With Google Custom Search, you can harness the power of Google to create a customized search experience for your own website.

Search Engine - eyePlorer is a visual way to search the Internet.  You really have to see this one to believe it.   Recent studies show that human thought processes have a strong visual component and that the brain can process images significantly faster than textual information and this site has been created in light of this research.

Search Engine for PDF files - Free PDF Search Engine allows you to search for books about different topics that are in PDF format and downloadable.

Search Engine - Newsmap is a way to search for newspaper articles from all over the world written in their native language.  Great site for foreign language teachers.

Study Tool/Reading & Writing Assistance - My Study Bar   is a tool which helps overcome problems that students commonly experience with studying, reading and writing. Timeline Creator/Research - Dipity offers Web 2.0 users a platform to integrate previously disparate and chaotic information in a single location and browse it visually and chronologically. Existing web content already contains timestamps and geolocations. Dipity seamlessly integrates that information and lets us publish or view it in a way that makes sense to the human brain.

Video - YouTube is a great way to find educational content in a video format to help teach content or as a hosting site for student created videos!  Teachers can create their own channel to host information videos they or their students create.

Video - ViewPure works with YouTube to take away those ads.  It is easy to use.

Video Stop Motion - JellyCam Stop Motion - Make stop-motion films with a web-cam or a bunch of photos.  No fancy features yet, but great for starting off or mucking about.

Video Conferencing - Skype is a tool that allows you to communicate with others from around the globe or right in your backyard using video conferencing.  Best of all, it's free!

Video Conferencing - Skype in the classroom is a free community to help teachers everywhere use Skype to help their students learn. It’s a place for teachers to connect with each other, find partner classes and share inspiration. This is a global initiative that was created in response to the growing number of teachers using Skype in their classrooms.

Vocabulary/Dictionary - Wordia is a site which not only offers traditional dictionary information, but gives people the opportunity to view videos that give different perspectives and viewpoints of the words.  Anyone can upload a video and this is a wonderful way for students to read, see and hear words.  Also they can create their own videos and upload them to share their perspectives with others.  There is also an educational section of the site now in Beta.

Word Clouds - WordSift is a way to visualize text such as a speech or any written text so that you and your students can find trends and concepts visually.
